 Owensboro High School Principal Anita Burnette has been named the 2010 "Kentucky Principal of the Year." an award given by the Kentucky Association of Secondary School Principals.
"Mrs. Burnette is an outstanding example of a secondary school principal who models excellence in collaborative leadership; has an exceptional understanding of all facets of curriculum, instruction, and assessment: and has developed a warm and caring environment for students in a way that few high schools could ever hope to match," said Dr. Larry Vick, Superintendent of the Owensboro Public Schools.
Prior to becoming principal,Mrs. Burnette was an O.H.S. assistant principal for two years during which time she very successfully developed an alternative program at the high school. She joined the O.H.S. faculty in 1988 working with students in the Vocational Programs for Special Education and was Special Education Department Chair before developing the alternative program. Mrs. Burnette holds degrees from Tennessee Technological University, the Unversity of Georgia, and Western Kentucky Unversity.
Mrs. Burnette received the"Dawson Orman Award" from KASSP in 2005 for her outstanding leadership qualities. She serves on the KHSAA Board of Control as well as being a member of other professional and community organizations. she has been Principal of Owensboro High School since 2002. Mrs. Burnette will represent Kentucky in consideration for the national MetLife/NASSP Principal of the Year Award.
